Apple made iMessage for Android mockups

Before this summer’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), rumors suggested Apple planned to introduce iMessage for Android. Sadly, that didn’t come to pass, but a new report provides hope to those still holding onto the dream.

According to Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, Apple has been internally circulating mockups of iMessage for the competing platform, suggesting a release could still happen. At the very least, it appears Apple is open to the idea, which goes against comments made over the summer.

Given how fragmented Google’s messaging platforms have become, there’s certainly an opportunity for Apple to go multi-platform.

The concepts being kicked around Apple’s campus apparently vary in design, with some adhering to Google’s famous Material Design language. Now, that’s something I’d love to see. Others simply look like iMessage as it does on iOS.

It’s probably not going to happen

Gruber warned that iMessage for Android may never happen. But considering how important messaging has become, it almost seems like a matter of when not if. If the platform also includes the iMessage App Store, it could open a fresh revenue stream for Apple.

Apple has already brought Apple Music to Android, so the move wouldn’t exactly be unprecedented. Of course, there are so many reasons why this probably isn’t going to happen, so don’t hold your breath.
