Latest rumor suggests the OnePlus 7 could be announced on May 14

We’re excited for the next OnePlus flagship already!

OnePlus has only been making phones for five years, but the company has grown to become one of the most beloved smartphone brands, especially in the US where it offers devices with flagship specs at a fraction of the price of its rivals.

The OnePlus 6T was one of our favorite devices of 2018, but with the smartphone industry taking leaps and strides forward this year, there’s a lot riding on the OnePlus 7.

What can we expect from the OnePlus 7? When will it be announced, and are there any key features or innovations to look forward to? Here’s what you need to know!

The latest OnePlus 7 news

April 15, 2019 – The OnePlus 7 could debut on May 14 with a regular and Pro variant.

The OnePlus 7 could be announced on May 14, if a leak by Ishan Agarwal is any indication. Ishan has previously leaked several devices accurately, so we have reason to believe this could be the day to watch out for.

The leak also suggests the phone could come in two versions – a regular and a “Pro” variant, although it remains to be seen what the Pro variant offers. These two devices will also be joined by a new 5G phone, which we’re expecting to debut in Q2 and will probably launch at the same event.

April 3, 2019 – These case renders show off the OnePlus 7 from all angles.

We now have a great idea of what the OnePlus 7 will look like, thanks to these case renders. Like we saw previously, the OnePlus 7 display is virtually all screen with the front-facing selfie camera now housed in a camera module that pops up from the top of the phone. You can see the space for this module in the case renders.

These renders also showcase the three rear cameras on the back, which appear to be full sensors. Perhaps we’ll see the regular, ultra-wide and telephoto set up that other companies have opted for, or a periscope-zoom style camera that Huawei and OPPO both have in their devices – the latter company being closely tied to OnePlus.

Whatever the cameras are, the OnePlus 7 looks like an interesting and sleek phone!

March, 3 2019 – OnePlus 7 renders showcase three cameras and a pop-up selfie camera

The OnePlus 7 could be a unique device, the likes of which we’ve never seen in the mainstream before. Thanks to reliable leaker @Onleaks, we may have our first look at the OnePlus 7 thanks to the latest batch of renders.

The front of the phone features a 6.5-inch Full HD+ display with thin bezels, and no notch. Instead, OnePlus has apparently moved the selfie camera to a pop-up camera module, which is similar to devices from Vivo and OPPO.

The rear of the OnePlus 7 features a glass back, with three rear cameras instead of two, although it’s unclear whether they’re all full sensors or one is a time-of-flight sensor for increased depth control. Also present is a USB-C charging port, speaker grill and OnePlus’ trademark physical alert switch. With no capacitive fingerprint sensor, we’re likely to see another in-display fingerprint sensor as well.

February 27, 2019 – The OnePlus 7 probably won’t have wireless charging

Yep, OnePlus isn’t jumping on the wireless charging bandwagon just yet. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has confirmed in an interview with CNET at MWC, that the OnePlus 7 won’t have wireless charging. He said:

OnePlus charging is one of the best. Wireless charging is far inferior.

This suggests that the company is sticking to its wired Dash charging solution, which is one of the fastest on the market. We’ve previously spoken to OnePlus about wireless charging – and other features – and they’ve made it clear that they won’t adopt a feature unless they think it’s better than what they have right now.

All the big details

The OnePlus 7 will have a pop-up camera

OnePlus is dropping the notch! After a year of notches in two of its devices, the company is adopting the full screen model with a pop-up camera.

According to the most recent renders we’ve seen, the front facing camera will be housed in a pop up camera enclosure, which looks futuristic and should make taking selfies much more fun. The render suggests that the camera pops up when you want to take a selfie, and then disappears into the phone when you’re not using it.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a pop-up camera like this. Devices such as the Vivo NEX have previously used a similar type of setup, and if OnePlus is going for the same, it’ll probably be powered by a small motor. While the design is certainly different to the hole-punches or waterdrop notches of other phones – like the Galaxy S10 Plus and Huawei P30 Pro respectively – it remains to be seen how durable a pop up camera, and internal motor, actually are after months and years of use.

When will the OnePlus 7 be released?

It’s unclear when the OnePlus 7 will go on sale, but OnePlus typically releases their new device between May and June, and it goes on sale a couple of weeks after the announcement. The latest rumor suggests we’ll see an announcement on May 14, suggesting a release by the end of May.

Of course, this all depends on various factors so this release date is a guess at best, and could be very different by the time the phone is announced on May 14.

How much will the OnePlus 7 cost?

We won’t know this for sure, but OnePlus has traditionally slapped its new phone with an affordable price tag compared to the competition. For the past few devices, OnePlus has steadily increased the price of its new phone by around $20 or so:

  • OnePlus 6T — $549
  • OnePlus 6 — $529
  • OnePlus 5T — $499
  • OnePlus 5 — $479

This would suggest the OnePlus 7 could cost slightly more than the OnePlus 6T, which should put its price tag between $570 and $600. Of course, there may be models with more storage/RAM/colors which would increase the price yet again.

Last year for the OnePlus 6T, OnePlus announced a partnership with T-Mobile, and it’s expected that the OnePlus 7 will also be available through T-Mobile at launch.
