Quentin Tarantino on Star Trek movie: “It’ll be Pulp Fiction in space”

The director said he’d do it his way and would have a gangster element.

What you need to know

  • Writer/director Quentin Tarantino shared his vision for a Star Trek movie.
  • Unsurprisingly, it would be R-rated.
  • Tarantino still isn’t sure if he would direct, but a script is nearly done.

Quentin Tarantino loves Star Trek — that much we already knew. Now, we finally have details for his mysterious Star Trek project, which he’s still coy on whether it’ll happen or not.

In an interview with Deadline, Tarantino revealed he’s had discussions with J.J. Abrams about a third Star Trek film which, if Tarantino had his way, would be done in his patented style.

I don’t think it’s that big of a deal but if I’m going to do it, then I’m going to do it my way. If you’ve seen my nine movies, you kind of know my way is an R-rated way and a way that is without certain restrictions. So that goes part and parcel. I think it would be more controversial if I said I’m going to do a PG movie and it’s going to fit exactly in the universe. It’s not me.

Tarantino added that his version would feel reminiscent of Pulp Fiction, one of his earliest and most revered works.

“It’ll be Pulp fiction in space,” Tarantino said. “That Pulp Fiction-y aspect, when I read the script, I felt, I never read a science fiction movie that has this sh^it in it, ever.”

According to Tarantino, Abrams approves of his vision, saying that with Star Trek, they have the freedom to go “any way we want to.”

As of now, a script from Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) has been completed, although Tarantino will reportedly put his spin on it after Once Upon a Time In Hollywood is released later this month.

Tarantino fans are eagerly waiting to see what the director will do next, since he has repeatedly said he only wants to direct 10 films (Once Upon a Time In Hollywood is his ninth). Will Star Trek be number 10? Or will he do something completely original instead?

“Look, I’ve got a situation” Tarantino said. “As long as Paramount likes the idea and the script they almost got nothing to lose right now when it comes to Star Trek. Deadpool showed that you can rethink these things, do them in a different way.”
