What you need to know
- David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will write and produce.
- It’ll be separate from the Skywalker saga.
- The film will release in 2022.
The mysterious project will arrive a few years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
We’ve known for a while that the creators of HBO’s Game of Thrones were working on new Star Wars movies. Now, we know when the first film will be released in theaters.
According to Disney CEO Bog Iger, the mysterious project is slated to arrive in 2022, a few years after the Skywalker saga concludes with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
“We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who are famous for Game of Thrones, and the next movie that we release will be theirs,” Iger said.
Iger revealed Disney made a deliberate choice for there to be a lengthy gap between Rise of Skywalker and the movie in 2022. We knew a break was coming, after the company admitted to Star Wars fatigue following the release of The Force Awakens, Rogue One, The Last Jedi, and Solo.
“We thought it would be smart for us to take a bit of a hiatus while we figure out what’s next,” Iger said.
In addition to the Star Wars movie coming in 2022 from Benioff and Weiss, it was previously announced that The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson, would also create new Star Wars films separate from the Skywalker trilogy.
Iger didn’t reveal any new details about what Johnson is working on, though a recent roadmap revealed Disney has plans to release two other Star Wars films in 2024 and 2026.
