The Avengers experience tragedy in this new game from Square Enix.
What you need to know
- Marvel’s Avengers is being released by Square Enix.
- The game will focus on a major catastrophe that breaks up the Avengers.
- It will be released on May 15, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC.
A few years after first teasing the project, Square Enix has finally revealed our first good look at Marvel’s Avengers.
Although the title is a completely original story, it feels very much like an extension of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many of our favorite heroes are accounted for, including Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, and Hulk. (Sorry, Hawkeye fans, but he’s MIA.)
Here’s the game’s official synopsis:
Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco—including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
It sounds like the story is borrowing some beats from movies like Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Endgame, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. According to Square Enix, Marvel’s Avengers will be a single and multi-player experience.
When Marvel’s Avengers was first teased, it was pitched as a multi-year, multi-game partnership, so this might not be the last time you can play as your favorite Avenger.
Marvel’s Avengers is set to release on May 15, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC. PlayStation 4 owners who pre-order will get exclusive access to beta access.
Don’t just watch the Avengers; play as the Avengers. Square Enix’s upcoming title will let you play as some of your favorite heroes, in a story that’s completely original from the MCU. The upcoming title is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, and Windows PC.
