Complete with a macho guy without his shirt on.
What you need to know
- The first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick has been released.
- The film is a direct sequel to the 1986 original and brings back Cruise as Maverick.
- It’ll be released on June 26, 2020.
Tom Cruise doesn’t run once in the trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, which was released to celebrate the opening day of San Diego Comic Con. Still, the upcoming sequel feels very much like a Tom Cruise movie, complete with motorcycle sunset rides, smoldering stares, and a guy without his shirt on.
Top Gun: Maverick isn’t a reboot or prequel. Instead, it’s a direct sequel to the 1986 classic, which helped put Cruise on the map as one of Hollywood’s leading action stars. In the new film, Cruise’s Maverick is now a flight instructor, and one of his students is the son of Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, who was Maverick’s wingman in the first film.
The trailer isn’t that heavy on plot and instead focuses on many of the action sequences audiences can expect in the film. Let’s face it: that’s the only reason why audiences liked the original in the first place.
In addition to Cruise, Top Gun: Maverick stars Val Kilmer, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, and Miles Teller. It’ll hit theaters on June 26, 2020.
